Statement of Interest in Communication.

“He began to wonder whether we could ever make psychology so absolute a science that each little spring of life would be revealed to us. As it was, we always misunderstood ourselves, and rarely understood others.” (Wilde, 1995)

Even though we do misunderstand ourselves and often others, there are ways to go around that issue, and that is through learning the different forms of communication. That’s why I believe that it is important to critically analyse communication processes. When communication is between two people, there are many things that could interfere with the different messages that are trying to be sent across. By placing this statement right after he wonders whether psychology will ever become an absolute science, I believe that Wilde is also wondering whether we as humans can ever truly understand each other, and therefore make communication an absolute science. Also, according to Adler and Rodman, it is very important for a person to have a good channel of communication with themselves; to listen to that little voice inside each of our heads. It is important for societies to have people who think like Wilde because, even though it is only a sentence in a novel, it could trigger something inside a person who could later work on deciphering the different forms of communication used between and within humans. I believe that communication, whether it is with others or with oneself, is the most important thing – and I strongly believe that this communication can be learned.
